were aware of the propensity to lead white to turn, and they sought alternatives.
French artists attempted to work with zinc white in the late eighteenth
century, but they found that its covered the sheet unevenly in a wash. In
1834, the English manufacturers, Winsor
& Newton introduced a patented white pigment made from zinc oxide,
which they called Chinese White.
